Using fancy fonts in your blog post – Windows Live Writer

Sometimes you would like to make something really stand out by using a fancy font. The Font command in the menu bar allows you to select from a wide range of fonts that are installed on your computer. So click on the “Font” A and select the font you like:

[Look it up.] There is a trap right here! Here is how it might look in your Windows Live Writer Edit pane (formatted for your specific blog site):

So what’s the problem? Looks ok, doesn’t it? Plough right on. Next you want it larger still. The font control only goes to 36, bummer. You manually type in “72” – doesn’t work – bummer, bummer. Then you remember there is an Edit – Paste special… option. So you open Word, type the text, format it to the font and size you like. Select it and copy it. Click Edit, then Paste special… :

Click Keep Formatting and presto, it looks like this:

Problem solved? You post your blog and feel smug.

Your problem is not solved. Here is how a couple of friends might see your blog:

So what went wrong? Just because you have “Vivaldi” font on your machine, does not mean that everyone else does also. Your friend’s browser will substitute another font if the one you specified is not installed on that computer. Font size typically works ok.

Moral: Do not use unusual fonts, they may not be available on your viewer’s computer and your post will not look like you intended.

Workaround? Does this post give you a hint? If you must have an unusual font and size, paste it in as a picture:

Happy posting!
